Mild night, heavy showers. Still lots of Common Quakers and Hebrew Characters about. First sightings in 2025 of:

1) & 2) Muslin Moth (male)
3) Double-striped pug

Also had a Brindled Pug but managed one blurry photo before he flew off! The unsociable git.

Numbers looking better this year. Mild and dry spring has helped. Still early in the year, but not long until the bright summer moths appear...

Overhead shot of 2cm moth on a finger. It is quite a handsome moth. It is a warm, smooth ash grey, with sparsely scattered black dots. It has a very furry head and two feathered antennae point left and right. The background is blurred green foliage.
Side of shot of Muslin Moth on a fingertip. It faces left. It is smooth, ashy grey with sparsely scattered black dots. It has a very furry head which almost floats behind like a cape. Its eye area is black. You can can just make out a yellow, furry abdomen and white, furry legs. Its antennae are thick and feathered.
Overhead shot of a pug moth on a wall. It stretches its wings out like a fan or like a dancer holding a burlesque dress with arms outstretched, so it's twice as wide as it is high. It has a thin abdomen and two black pin eyes. It is grey with two distinct black equidistant black lines that start on the top edge of the outstretched wings and curve in a U shape so it crossed the abdomen and ends up on the top wing edge the other side.

I just spent the past 3.5 hours walking around in the woods at night with a few students for an amphibian night lab. Full moon, wood frogs and barred owls calling through the night, spotted salamanders swimming around. (they requested a weekend option, and it was only supposed to be 2 hours but they wanted to keep exploring more). the night and their excitement of seeing wildlife lifts my mood.
