Copyright is now more than ever, and to an even greater extent than other legal concepts, something that only applies in one direction between rich and poor. You will never ever in a million years win a copyright suit against Google, OpenAI, MidJourney, Facebook, or any of the other giants.
And meanwhile any unauthorized use of movies and music from the fucking 30s is still illegal.
@pettter i suspect that the current language model rush in part is caused by matthew butterick's co pilot litigation. the behemoths wants to convince everyone, in particular the public, that these shitty parrots are inevitable and amazing
in other words, i think this hype is driven by fear of losing in court
@troglodyt quite possibly that's part of the motivation yeah, though as you say there's of course a lot of other stuff going on as well.
