@daringfireball the only problem is that all this is on android, unless Google can fold into iOS I’ll pass.
Google cannot "fold it into" iOS for an extremely obvious reason.
@dmitriid @daringfireball which is my point, it’s not for me because it’s hooked into Android OS which is a poor imitation of iOS.
Nope, that's not the obvious reason why it can't be folded into iOS.
So we end up stuck with a shitty Siri that can barely set timers (and often fails to do even that).
@dmitriid @daringfireball surely it’s the same reason Siri can’t be folded into Android? I have no complaints about either. I use Siri multiple times everyday and I’m looking forward to its new features coming later this year
It is, so you see the obvious issue.
And yet somehow you still arrive at the original "if Google can't fold it into iOS, I'll pass". How exactly do you know magine Google doing that?
And yeah, good luck having those imaginary features any time this year (just as any other imaginary features Apple promoted for Siri in the last 13 years)
@dmitriid @daringfireball I probably wasn’t clear, I don’t actually care that it can’t be folded into iOS. My point was that it could be as “ground breaking” as Google promote, it won’t matter a jot to me. My Siri and my iOS has had multiple updates since I went iPhone in 2008. So I’m not worried.
Ah okay, now I see.
I disagree with "Siri has had multiple updates". It's just as barely useful (often less) than what was demoed in 2011: https://youtu.be/SpGJNPShzRc?si=L_sArvO_tekCNqp
None of the "intelligent personal assistant" stuff ever materialized, its quality was up and down often several times in the intervening years.
Just last year: https://x.com/dmitriid/status/1867841895206203766, https://x.com/dmitriid/status/1781030511336456612 (these I bothered to rant about)
*Edited wording*
@dmitriid @daringfireball “I disagree Siri has had multiple updates”, I mean you can disagree with facts, but it doesn’t really work in your favour
I’d say about 80 percent of what Apple promised for Siri is there in 18.31 and there’s more coming in other updates. I don’t see what the issue is?
I’ve worked in IT for over 30 years and see updates come out quickly and slowly. Why are you so riled up about it
I see the *fact* that Siri's functionality barely progressed since 2011.
I see the *fact* that it's regularly broken for the simplest tasks. To the point that it simply stops doing actions it has been doing for months prior to breakage.
I see the *fact* that most people barely use it beyond a glorified timer because even adding reminders or writing notes with it can charitably be called non-deterministic

@Strwpok @dmitriid @daringfireball yeah this troll is just being obtuse or is naturally not very bright. What you said was very clear. Touting Android is like touting Windows — it has no impact on me because I’d never use a shitty platform just for some feature.
@delric @Strwpok @daringfireball
On the one hand we have a person engaging in a conversation and presenting his point of view.
On the other hand we have a person calling others "obtuse or not very bright" out of pure spite.
Will let others decide who is the troll.
@delric @dmitriid @daringfireball I think his bigger issue is that he loves using iPhones, but he doesn’t like Apple. So he’s stuck in a vicious circle of self flagellation where he has to find fault even if it’s not an issue.
@dmitriid @Strwpok @daringfireball in all the years of using Siri it’s never once failed to set a timer. Do you have a mouthful of marbles or something?
@delric @Strwpok @daringfireball
Lucky you. I've had it fail somewhat often especially while driving in a car, or quickly saying "thirteen" or "fifteen" which it sometimes confuses for "thirty" and "fifty".
As for "marbles in mouth", there are fewer people speaking Queen's English, and many more people speaking all sorts of accents in all sorts of situations.
@dmitriid @delric @daringfireball maybe you’re having an atypical issue, but there’s millions of people using Siri everyday (including me) to set timers, alarms and reminders. I’d be lost without it on my phone and Apple Watch.
@Strwpok @delric @daringfireball
1. I'm one of those millions of people
2. As personal anecdote: I've heard similar complaints from most people around me who trying to engage with Siri
3. Timers/alarms/reminders is a bit too little for an "intelligent personal assistant" that has been around for 13 years ;)

@Strwpok @delric @daringfireball
HEY SIRI ADD EGGS TO REMINDERS.
As for the actual useful stuff when you actually want to use it as an actual assistant? Well, I just tried it:
@Strwpok @delric @daringfireball
Did you add just eggs, or did you try and add, like I did, eggs, bread, and milk?
It has no issues adding one item at a time, I never claimed it didn't.
@Strwpok @delric @daringfireball
And as with most of these things you never know what the actual capabilities and limitations are.
A few days ago I was driving and said "Add note with text <something something>", it refused. Literally right now I tried the same incantation, and it worked.
Go figure :)
I guess most people just shrug, dismiss this, and never use it again.
@dmitriid @delric @daringfireball maybe your cellular signal was weak in the car.
@Strwpok @delric @daringfireball
It did allow me "add note <text>" then. And that's the issue again: it's impossible to know which incantation will work. Despite Siri being 13 years old, and Apple telling they have an amazing dedicated neural processor for at least 6 of those
@dmitriid @delric @daringfireball I just did what you did in your post. I can try the additional steps as well, but I would assume it would see them as a single item to add to a list.
@Strwpok @delric @daringfireball
But I only see one item added in your screenshot, not three.
I'm my case it did attempt to add two :)
@Strwpok @delric @daringfireball
And that's why I'm saying that it's still as bad and limited as it was in the original demo in 2011.
It can barely do the absolute minimum of things, unreliably, even within Apple's own ecosystem. It's even more of a hit or miss when third party apps integrate with it.
@Strwpok @delric @daringfireball
For any interaction that is anywhere "intelligent" it's just unbelievably bad
"Remind me to buy <a list of items>". You'd think they would've at least hardcoded the common interactions.
@dmitriid @delric @daringfireball I don’t doubt you can find some people who have issues with Siri, but Apple sell 40 MILLION iPhones every 3 months. Where’s the massive backlash if it wasn’t doing most of what people want. It seems you’re part of a small percentage (less than one percent) with ongoing issues.
@Strwpok @delric @daringfireball
Why would there be a massive backlash for a feature most people don't use, or use it in very limited manner like setting an alarm clock or a timer?
Samsung is selling millions of TVs and phones with Bixby. And compared to Bixby Siri is Einstein-level genius. And still there's no backlash :)
@dmitriid @delric @daringfireball because I imagine a higher percentage of people use Siri for reminders, timers, notes and events than would ever think to use a smart TV to do stuff (apart from change channel).
