Loukas (They/Them) 🏳️‍⚧️

The UK is now one of the most left-wing countries in Europe. Did anyone see that coming?

@Loukas That was not really what I expected, to be honest, but I won't complain. I just wish more countries would do the same.

@onecreativecat but we can see all the pro-Palestinian independents who took seats from Labour or came short by just a few hundred as well, plus Greens and Plaid. This is the biggest left-of Labour vote in England and Wales in my lifetime.

@Loukas there is progress. But I don't think Starmer is left, to be fair, definitely not after his annoucements this week!!
I am happy with the Green seats, it was hard for them to get there, and they got second place in so many constituencies! So much way to go though... And it will be important to keep fighting for disabled, trans and gay, and all the minorities rights. Because I am not convinced Labour is really progressist on this sadly.

@onecreativecat sure, but since my statement was relative, it also encompasses how far other European countries have gone to the right.

@Loukas left-wing???
Sorry but labour is far from left wing and I suspect that if Starmer does exactly what he says he will do, then the next elections will be a deja-vu from what we fear it will happen to France on Sunday.

@Loukas I'd hardly say that. All we got was a change in colour management wear.
Likely to continue many of the same Tory policies that got us to where we are

@Nikkileah It''s true that the UK is now one of the most left-wing countries in Europe. Whether that's meaningful or not is another matter entirely.

@Loukas Keir Starmer literally purged the left wing out of his party, but ok. Tony Blair was left wing too I guess.

@Loukas But yes, strictly speaking it is a true statement, it's just sad that's what we call left-wing now.

@MatejLach these are the dying days of (neo) liberal democracy.

@Loukas I usually don't follow UK shit after Brexit but now I'm like "should we give them another chance?"

@Loukas Actually I can't understand how it didn't happen far sooner. I mean, the track record of rightie politics & policy has been atrocious from a regular-people standpoint, not just the past decade-and-a-half but all the way back to friggin' Thatcher - the majority of the British has had more than enough reason to turn left for like two generations...

@jwcph Thatcher's plan was to create a huge number of middle class people who'd be obsessed with house prices, by selling council homes and national utilities. When that money ran out the conservatives crashed and it was only Brexit that briefly resurrected them.

@Loukas BTW a very good example of how The Right™️ should either get better politics or simply be regarded as unfit to govern, as their plans are never remotely viable from a society standpoint...

@Loukas Labour is not left-wing. Starmer is centre-right and has moved into the ground previously occupied by the Conservative party moderates.

(On the rest of the EU shifting right … no dispute.)

@Loukas well, it's left compared to its Overton window, whose barycentre was not exactly in communist zone.
Said from France where extrem right (the nazi kind, founded by vanilla wafen ss) is at 35%, for full irony.

I think Europe just forgot what left is, what hope on a better together and some billionaires head on the roads mean.

Still, congrats to the UK, I would so deeply love to see something alike that in France Sunday, even with our pro capitalists center left that brought us here to begin with.
